Basic Troubleshooting

We’ve made a short list to help you determine if your machine needs to be serviced. Sometimes simple adjustments on your machine make for an easy, and quick fix that will get you back to sewing right away!

Tension & Threading:

Re-threading both the top and bobbin thread will often times correct tension problems. The most common tension issue is often caused by incorrect threading. Make sure to thread your machine with your presser foot up to ensure the tension discs are open for the thread to be properly seated.

Replace your Needle:

A new needle is the most cost-effective way to ensure proper stitch quality. We recommend you change your needle every eight hours of sewing. Be sure to use the correct needle for the weight and type of fabric you are sewing.

Oil your Machine:

Maintain machine lubrication for a smooth and quiet sound. Refer to your manual for specific instructions for your machine. For ease, oil your machine with sewing machine oil every time you change the needle.

Service:

For best sewing results, have your machine serviced annually for an in-depth clean, oil, and adjustment. This is a great time to ask questions and get to know our knowledgeable technicians.

Gram

BERNINA Certified Technician

Gram’s passion for fixing things started with Legos and quickly expanded to anything he could take apart. By age 10, he built his first bicycle wheel and later built thousands more professionally. Fascinated by sewing and machines, becoming a sewing machine technician was a natural next step. A garment sewer at heart, he especially enjoys making tracksuits but has also dabbled in bags and upholstery. On weekends, you’ll find him gardening, biking, working with metal, or treasure hunting at estate sales and thrift stores.

Patrick

BERNINA Certified Technician

With years of experience as a bicycle mechanic and a background in sewing as a hobby, Patrick was ready for a new challenge—becoming a sewing machine technician was the perfect fit. In recent years, he’s focused on sewing bike-related bags but have recently returned to making clothes. Outside of sewing, Patrick enjoys riding and tinkering with his bikes, camping when the weather allows, and playing the occasional board game.
