Private Lesson Rates:

  • $150 – 2 hours, one-on-one
  • $260 — 2 hours, two students with one teacher

Modern Domestic is not part of the scheduling process, teachers will reply directly to you to confirm your lesson at Modern Domestic. Lessons are generally booked 2-3 weeks in advance.

Meet Sam

Sam is a self-taught sewist who has been crafting with curiosity for 15 years. She loves teaching others the joy of sewing, and encourages learning in all forms, even if mistakes happen! As a child she made doll clothes, and moved to full sized clothes and accessories in college. Now she loves finding tried-and-true patterns that fit her body, and making small unique adjustments to customize garments endlessly! She also really enjoys making mini patchwork quilts with scraps, and updating the look of any room with handmade home decor like pillow shams, poufs, table runners, and curtains.

Sam’s Expertise:

  • Beginner Garment Making
  • Bags, Pillows, and Accessories
  • Quilt Piecing
  • Kids lessons (ages 8 and up)
  • Sewing with stretch fabrics on a serger

For many years Rachel has refined her sewing skills which has transferred into her expertise as a teacher.  She’s often whipping up garments from the latest new patterns or refining the fit on a favorite go-to pattern. Whether you’re looking to sew for the first time or if you need more technical assistance you’re in good hands.

Meet Colleen

Sewing has been a love of Colleen’s since childhood when they made their first shift dress from bed sheets! Colleen brings 15+ years of knowledge and skills through hands-on experience designing and fabricating costumes for a Philadelphia-based dance company, teaching private lessons in hand and machine sewing, sewing custom apparel, and studying at the Portland Fashion Institute. Colleen enjoys sharing their knowledge and can’t wait to help you with your project!

Meet Amy

Sewing and crafting since she was a child, Amy had never been far from a sewing machine. She currently teaches and provides costume design and construction for public schools and dance studios, has written 3 beginner sewing books, and taught sewing classes online for Creativebug. She especially loves teaching sewing for theater, dance, and cosplay.

Private Lesson Payment

Modern Domestic requires payment in advance for private lessons.

Private Lesson Payment Process:

  • Once you and your instructor have settled on a date and time you will be emailed a copy of your invoice to pay by phone (or in person at either MD location). Please call 503-808-9910 ex. 1 for payment.
  • Once you’ve paid for your lesson it will be added to the store calendar and considered confirmed.
  • Gather supplies needed for your lesson and get excited for fun sewing!
  • 24 hour cancellation required for refund or store credit. Please contact your teacher directly to cancel.

Students get perks!

  • What’s ours is yours! You are invited to use our in-studio BERNINA sewing machines, cutting tools, and go-to tools while you are in your sewing lesson. If you prefer to bring your own sewing machine confirm with your instructor prior to your lesson.
  • Receive 10% off on the day of your private lesson (excludes sewing machines, furniture, and classes).

SHOW PROOF OF VACCINE AT CHECK-IN

Welcome! Proof of vaccine card (two shots + booster) is required upon arrival for class & studio rental. Physical card or photo of card are accepted. You do not need to wear a mask if you have been fully vaccinated.

MASKS REQUIRED FOR STUDENTS WITHOUT PROOF OF VACCINE

If you cannot provide proof of vaccine you are required to wear a mask fully covering your nose and mouth at all times during class.

SANITIZE YOUR HANDS

Hand sanitizer is provided for you upon entry.
