Private Lesson Rates:

  • $150 – 2 hours, one-on-one
  • $200 – 2 hours, two students with one teacher
  • Group Rates available subject to size and length of lesson.

View our teachers below and contact them directly to set up a private lesson. Lessons are generally booked 2-3 weeks in advance. Modern Domestic is not part of the scheduling process, teachers will reply directly to you to confirm your lesson at Modern Domestic.

Please Note: All lessons booked at our Alberta Studio are scheduled based on the classroom availability.  

Meet Chloe

Chloe comes from a family of artists and makers and has been surrounded by creativity + textiles all her life. She made her first quilt at 11 and got her first job in a quilt shop as a teen! Chloe enjoys the practical and tactile qualities of working with fabric and is always on the lookout for exciting sewing projects that expand her skills. Her favorite part about sewing is choosing the fabric- especially when fun colors are involved!  She is passionate and excited about sharing her sewing knowledge with others.

Meet Colleen

Sewing has been a love of Colleen’s since childhood when they made their first shift dress from bed sheets! Colleen brings 15+ years of knowledge and skills through hands-on experience designing and fabricating costumes for a Philadelphia-based dance company, teaching private lessons in hand and machine sewing, sewing custom apparel, and studying at the Portland Fashion Institute. Colleen enjoys sharing their knowledge and can’t wait to help you with your project!

Meet Amy

Sewing and crafting since she was a child, Amy had never been far from a sewing machine. She currently teaches and provides costume design and construction for public schools and dance studios, has written 3 beginner sewing books, and taught sewing classes online for Creativebug. She especially loves teaching sewing for theater, dance, and cosplay.

Meet Lori

Lori has a passion for sewing and crafting. She owned a handbag business for 5 years here in Portland called Minnie + George. She specializes and has taught many workshops about leather work, sandal and bag making, pattern drafting, and garment construction.  She’s also worked for Seamwork Magazine as a contributing writer, sharing her love of sustainability through sewing, mending, and reuse. Book a lesson with Lori, and you’re in good hands!

Meet Sam

Sam is a self-taught sewist who has been crafting with curiosity for 15 years. She loves teaching others the joy of sewing, and encourages learning in all forms, even if mistakes happen! As a child she made doll clothes, and moved to full sized clothes and accessories in college. Now she loves finding tried-and-true patterns that fit her body, and making small unique adjustments to customize garments endlessly! She also really enjoys making mini patchwork quilts with scraps, and updating the look of any room with handmade home decor like pillow shams, poufs, table runners, and curtains.

Private Lesson Payment Process:

Modern Domestic requires payment in advance for private lessons.

  • Once you and your instructor have settled on a date and time you will be emailed a copy of your invoice to pay by phone (or in person at either MD location). Please call 503-808-9910 ex. 1 for payment.
  • Once you’ve paid for your lesson it will be added to the store calendar and considered confirmed.
  • Gather supplies needed for your lesson and get excited for fun sewing!

 

Students get perks!

  • What’s ours is yours! You are invited to use our in-studio BERNINA sewing machines and classroom tools while you are in your sewing lesson. If you prefer to bring your own sewing machine confirm with your instructor prior to your lesson.
  • Receive 10% off on the day of your private lesson (excludes sewing machines, furniture, and classes).

 

Private Lesson Cancellation Policy

  • Contact your teacher directly to cancel or reschedule.
  • There is NO REFUND NOR TRANSFER OF FUNDS TO ANOTHER LESSON IF WE RECEIVE NOTIFICATION OF YOUR INABILITY TO ATTEND WITH LESS THAN 72 HOURS NOTICE.
  • No-shows forfeit refund or exchange.
  • If you are sick, we ask that you take steps to protect yourself and others by staying home or masking. If you test positive for Covid-19, we ask that you stay home. We do provide hand sanitizer upon request and encourage regular hand washing prior to sharing tools and spaces.

We hold this Private Lesson Cancellation Policy to ensure our teachers are compensated for their time, and other students waiting for a lesson are not missing lesson opportunities due to late cancellations.
