(After)Quilt Market Classes: Learn Paper Piecing with Carolyn Friedlander

There are so many reasons to be excited about Quilt Market this year. For us, getting to attend the trade show (which will be held at the Portland Convention Center May 17th – 19th) and seeing new fabric lines, patterns, etc. has us giddy with excitement. Although Quilt Market itself isn’t open to the general public, we wanted to include you in the fun, so we’ve recruited several quilting-world luminaries to hold classes at MD while they are in town.

We are so pleased to have not one but TWO classes taught by nationally known quilter and designer Carolyn Friedlander. Carolyn describes her aesthetic as drawing on elements of art, architecture, and the history of quiltmaking. Through practice, education, and frequent experimentation, she explores these influences and others for fresh ideas that will contribute to both the present and future of the craft. You may recognize Carolyn’s name from the excellent Architextures fabric collection, which was inspired by her background in Architecture. We carry the line in the shop, so make sure to check it out next time you’re in.

Her Aerial Wall Hanging class is for beginners and will be held on Monday, May 20th at 10:00 am. In it, you’ll learn how to paper piece while tackling a strip-friendly, modern project. Carolyn will also walk you through fabric and color strategy, creating your own color gradations, maximizing your scraps, and other tips for finishing your Aerial quilt top.

The Olive Wall Hanging class will take your paper piecing skills to the next level, and is great as either a follow up to the Aerial Wall Hanging class or on its own. This class is perfect for students with some paper piecing experience, ready to try a more challenging project. In it, Carolyn will walk you through each step of creating your own graphic trees while also offering tips on fabric and color strategy, working with directional fabrics, maximizing your scraps, and other tips for finishing your Olive quilt top. This class will be held on Monday, May 20th at 2:00 pm.

Make sure to reserve your spot in class before it fills!
