Iris Shorts by Colette Patterns

It’s June and in Oregon we’re still not entirely in summer yet. We have seen some bursts of sun and pleasant weather, so I know it’s just around the corner. I wanted to get a jump on summer sewing and recently have been highly productive. A Colette Peony has finally been completed, plus a simple gathered skirt. Bolt recently got a new book Sew What You Love in and I gotta say, I love the easy dolman sleeve knit top from it (which can be seen below). As soon as Sarai’s new patterns were announced, I was highly intrigued Colette Pattern’s new Iris shorts. Just this weekend I sewed up my first pair.

For me, these are shorts for those who would describe themselves as decidedly “not shorts” people. Nor do I think I’ve shown off this much leg in 20 years, since I was a kid. I did not adjust length at all, curious how short they would be as written.  I feel remarkably okay with them. Who’d a thought?

Can I just say I’m a total convert to the Straight Stitch Foot #13. For all straight seaming, I’ve been exclusively using this foot for a couple of months (instead of #1 foot) and I feel the stitch quality is the tops. No other feet required for the shorts except an Invisible Zipper foot #35.

Over all though, I’m very happy with how they look sewn up. I used a seersucker I found at Bolt and also bought a dark denim for the second pair. We’ve got patterns in stock if you’re ready to show off some leg! Quick to turn out and easy with no fly front (side zip only!), I’m thinking this might make a great class.
