We are so proud to have three members of our team here at Modern Domestic contribute their projects to Hand-Stitched Home by Susan Beal. This book is packed with great projects. Now that it’s cold out, we can’t help but want to use warm wool in all our sewing projects!
Michelle, our phenomenal teacher and staff member, used a striped jacquard to create this statement shoulder bag. Because Serape is usually used in blankets or coats, she wanted to use this wool in an nontraditional way. Michelle shared some tips on working with stripes, “It’s easier than you might think. Be sure to cut straight and use a walking foot. Always measure twice, cut once!”
Lupine, co-owner of Modern Domestic, created this beautiful shawl using a medium-weight Pendleton wool. She loves how making garments like this with wool come together so fast because the edges don’t have to be finished! She used a simple decorative stitch in just one seam and left the bottom edge and neckline as is. It’s perfect!
Meredith Hobbs, our amazing manager and BERNINA wizard, paired her love of embroidery with wool and leather – it doesn’t get much better than that! Here’s what Meredith has to say about her combination of embroidery and wool, “The wool is super supportive. It’s a great background for embroidery that prevents puckering. I wanted to make a luxurious version of a tote bag, and most of my projects have some added embroidery element to them. Embroidery is my favorite!”
