You have never touched a sewing machine before or it has been years since you have. You know very little to nothing about sewing but you are eager to get started.
You’ve taken a class or two and are starting to get comfortable with the basics. You know what a seam allowance is, you’ve sewn a little on your own, but you still need a little help with remembering how to thread the machine and wind a bobbin. These classes usually have little if any homework to complete outside of class time. The prerequisite for any Beginner class is a Sew Basics class, Learn to Sew class, or equivalent. This skill level is not for people who have never used a sewing machine before.
You have a good handle on the basics and are ready to dip your toe into more challenging waters. You’re still fairly new to sewing from patterns and could use help with how to manipulate the pattern to get a better fit. You want to add some new skills to your repertoire (invisible zippers, setting-in sleeves, sewing with a serger, etc.). Classes generally require homework.
You’re no longer intimidated by the idea of reading a pattern and comfortable reading a pattern and have made a number of projects. You would like to learn different methods of zipper installation or how to alter your patterns. You’re venturing into more complicated patterns (e.g., lined garments, plackets, collars, zippered fly). Classes are faster paced and generally require homework.
