Have you wanted to sew with a pattern, but not sure what everything means? Maybe it’s been years since you have used a garment pattern and want to refresh your skills?  This Lab has minimal sewing in class and focuses on the beginning stages of making a garment from a pattern. You’ll come away from this Lab with an understanding of pattern terminology, how to properly measure your body, and how to transfer your measurements to your pattern with Swedish Tracing paper. We’ll discuss basic fit adjustments as a group and learn how to transfer those adjustments to your pattern so you can create a garment that you can make again and again.

Your supplies may be available for purchase at Modern Domestic! You are welcome to purchase supplies online and pick up the day of your class, just select NE Alberta Store for pick-up. If you plan to shop in-store for supplies the day of your class, we recommend planning about 45 minutes for shopping. Please note that our store hours are Monday-Saturday, 10am-5pm.

Supply List:

– Pattern: Grainline Studio Willow Tank (size 0-18) & Grainline Studio Willow Tank (size 14-32) is available in PDF only, you can purchase the pattern here.

Swedish Tracing Paper

– Optional: Pen/Pencil for pattern tracing & a notebook for note taking

*Skill Levels: Beginner – You’ve taken a class or two and are starting to get comfortable with the basics. You know what a seam allowance is, you’ve sewn a little on your own, but you still need a little help with remembering how to thread the machine and wind a bobbin. These classes usually have little if any homework to complete outside of class time. The prerequisite for any Beginner class is a Sew Basics class, Learn to Sew class, or equivalent. This skill level is not for people who have never used a sewing machine before.

Modern Domestic Labs: You’re interested in sewing in a group setting and prefer to have an instructor’s guidance on specific techniques and/or skills that are proposed in the Lab’s topic. You have the ability to sew at your own pace, the expert help to keep you on track and sewing along, and a variety of options (sometimes endless!) when it comes to choosing the project you want to sew.
