This class is perfect for the beginner sewist looking to start adventuring into garment sewing! Shirt No. 1 by 100 Acts of Sewing is a simple top with short sleeves – perfect for Portland’s hot summer! This shirt has a customizable neckline making it easy to wear and adaptable for everyone. You’ll leave this class with a new understanding of seam finishes and bias neck facing.
All class supplies are available for purchase at Modern Domestic. Please purchase supplies in advance of your class. You are welcome to purchase supplies online and pick up the day of your class, just select NE Alberta Store for pick-up. If you plan to shop in-store for supplies the day of your class, we recommend allowing at least 45 minutes to shop. Please note that our store hours are Monday-Saturday, 10am-5pm.
Supply List:
– Fabric, Colleen recommends: lightweight cotton lawn or voile, linen, natural fiber blend woven fabric, or even a cotton woven with a fun print (no jersey or knits)
– Optional: additional fat quarter (½ yard) of contrast fabric for bias facing.
– 1 spool of Mettler Metrosene All-Purpose Polyester Thread (coordinating or color matching with exterior fabric is recommended)
– 3/4″ (18mm) bias tape maker
*Make sure to pre-wash (and iron) your fabric in advance of class. This prevents possible fabric shrinkage that could otherwise make your finished garment too small.
*Skill Level: Beginner – You’ve taken a class or two and are starting to get comfortable with the basics. You know what a seam allowance is, you’ve sewn a little on your own, but you still need a little help with remembering how to thread the machine and wind a bobbin. These classes usually have little if any homework to complete outside of class time. The prerequisite for any Beginner class is a Sew Basics class, Learn to Sew class, or equivalent. This skill level is not for people who have never used a sewing machine before.
