Open Sew

Open sewing is your sewing and crafting studio away from home; your work space without distraction, clutter, or the interruptions of daily life. We have created two classrooms each furnished with 8 sewing machines, two sergers, pressing equipment, tools, and more, and are happy to share them with you during open hours. We can offer you support and guidance on a project, show you how to use our machines, and give you our opinion about fabric choice and thread color, if you want it. Open sewing assumes that you can work independently at your own pace and have an understanding of basic sewing and machine functions. If you need help getting to this point, start with a sew basic, learn to sew, or beginning level class and you will be ready for independent studio time.

Open Sew $8/hour

Prepaid punch card available $50/10 hours (+2 hours to give to a friend)

You are welcome to drop in and sew all hours that we are open, unless there are 2 classes scheduled.

MD Open Sewing Policy:

Open sewing is ment to be independent studio time for you and those around you. Please respect others desire to maximize their time in our store by:

  • Please be considerate with employees time. While we love to assist you with simple questions about the machines and projects, we are there to help all sewists, customers, teachers, and do other store duties. If you would like to schedule one on one assistance, any employee will be happy to do so.
  • Children under 18 are not able to participate in open sew at this time. Check the calendar for upcoming kids sewing classes, camps, and clubs.
  • Small children are the responsibility of the parent at all times and while we have our own and love them dearly, Modern Domestic is full sharp, hot, and expensive items, and is not a great place for children to explore.
  • Bobbins are provided for your project or class while at MD, if you would like to own your bobbin, you may buy them individually and take them home. Otherwise, leave them with us and we will pass them on to the next eager sewist.
  • Tools and machine accessories are here for your use and they are included in the hourly rate. When checking out your tool kit or any of our presser feet, we require that you leave your credit card; upon returning all of the items, your card is returned to you.
