There are so many reasons to be excited about Quilt Market this year. For us, getting to attend the trade show (which will be held at the Portland Convention Center May 17th – 19th) and seeing new fabric lines, patterns, etc. has us giddy with excitement. Although Quilt Market itself isn’t open to the general public, we wanted to include you in the fun, so we’ve recruited several quilting-world luminaries to hold classes at MD while they are in town. — READ MORE —

Sign up now for May’s Sewing Society. This month we’ll be focusing on an accessory that’s perfect for spring–a clutch!
Today was like Christmas. When our mailman strolled in this morning carrying a weathered looking box, we excitedly shouted, “is it from South Africa?!?” When he said yes, we practically hugged him. Our Skinny laMinx arrived! We couldn’t open it quickly enough to reveal the most beautiful fabric from Heather Moore. You can see a sweet little video telling her tale here.
Maybe it’s because I live in the woods. Maybe it’s the colors. Maybe it’s because Art Gallery fabrics feel so amazing. Maybe it’s all three. I cannot take my mind off this fabric! Indian Summer by Sarah Watson has arrived and we are busy planning projects, finding inspiration, and basically drooling over every piece in the collection. Art Gallery quilting cotton fabrics boast 120 thread count compared to the 60 count that most quilting weight cottons have. This makes Art Gallery super appropriate for structured garments like Colette Patterns newest addition – Laurel.
We are having so much fun around here receiving beautiful fabric, planning spring classes (and summer too) and working on projects for both Sewing Society and Patchwork Society. I wanted to share a few quick pics and let you know that we will be closed Sunday, to spend a little time with our friends and families, celebrating Easter and eating chocolate with our children. — READ MORE —
Spring has arrived in Portland and so have some great new patterns perfect for Spring! Colette patterns just released a new pattern, Laurel, and we’ve started carrying the Wiksten patterns. The Tova Top and the Wiksten Tank have been out in the sewing world for a while, but if you purchase them online, you have to tile them out…
I met Luke via Facebook. Our online introduction quickly lead to real life spicy wings at Pok Pok and a delightful chat over sticky fingers. Luke is one of the most delightful people I have ever met, full of enthusiasm for quilting, design, wings, and new friends. He was pretty easy to convince to come at teach at MD, even with his recent move to LA. He is flying up especially for this class! — READ MORE —
Needing a little pop of color in the dining room and the wonderful combinations of fabric arriving gave me some morning inspiration for a new spring table runner. This was an easy choice with a fresh bouquet of daffodils at home, I knew there had to be yellow. Constellations is full of beautiful blues and it was fun to choose a solid to go around the edge. The very best part about this runner was that I stitched it up on the BERNINA 750QE. This machine is so dreamy to sew on! — READ MORE —
Summer is a wonderful time at Modern Domestic. We get to spend nearly each week introducing our youngest sewists to BERNINA machines and many new projects and skills that will last their lifetimes. The projects and classes this year are very exciting. We have a My First Sewing Machine class that includes a bernette 46 sewing machine complete with a week of time spent learning all about it as the students make projects to keep! That’s right, the kids keep the projects AND the machine at the end of the week.
