Much like backstitching your seams on a sewing machine, there are ways to secure serged seams to prevent them from coming undone. There’s not enough time in the world for me to separate the 3 or 4 strands and tie a knot. I like quick! And easy! 1. By machine Stitches are secured when they… Read more »

Zippered Pouches for All! and a Giveaway
At Bolt on Sunday, I was overwhelmed by the awesomeness of their fabrics. Some of these are so wonderful (and while I could buy fabric just about every day) but these days I try to buy fabrics only when I need them. Need…want…need…want. It can be a fine line. I realized my zippered pouch class… Read more »
Sergery: Textured Nylon vs. Polyester (especially for roll hems!)
Traditionally, sewists use polyester cone thread for serger sewing. Polyester is good because it’s strong and cone thread maximizes yardage. Sergers are thread-eaters! You can actually use a variety of threads in a serger–metallic threads, thin ribbons, fishing line-like nylon, & textured nylon. We carry Maxi-Lock at the store (it’s an industry standard) but Gutermann… Read more »
Sergery–Understanding Differential Feed
Differential Feed. You may have seen this term in your serger manual or printed on the face of your machine and wondered what it means. Having just taught another session of Serger Basic Vol. 1, I showed a whole new group of students how helpful these tools can be. They’re all really quite small, and mostly… Read more »
Sergery–Common Stitches
Sergers are very misunderstood machines. They seem so intimidating–all that thread, all those needles and loopers! They can be easy and fun to use, versatile, and can take your work from looking home sewn to professional. Sure, threading them may be *slightly* more complex than your standard sewing machine but they are by far easier… Read more »

Stitching, Decoratively.
There’s a lot of conversations around here about the use of decorative stitches. Purpose and whatnot. And really the consensus is, use them anytime! They are great for enhancing and embellishing–as an extra touch on a skirt or dress or even on home dec or craft projects. A great place to look at decorative stitches… Read more »
